P-Teaching&Lrng/CarceralSpaces

This course is centered on teaching and learning in carceral spaces. It gives students the opportunity to facilitate weekly tutoring sessions in the Hampshire County Jail and the Franklin County Jail; to read and explore critical prison studies; and to discuss broad questions around equity and access to education in prison and jail.

Writing in Engineering

This course fulfills the University's Junior Year Writing Requirement for students in the College of Engineering. Students will be introduced to traditional technical and scientific writing forms, including outlines, summaries, mechanical and technical descriptions, extended technical definitions, research reports, and proposals. Grammar review, oral presentations and on-line research are significant components of this course. Students will also investigate ethics in engineering practice and research.

Introductory Econometrics

This course introduces methods for analyzing and drawing reliable conclusions from economic data. The goal is to develop an intuitive understanding of econometric techniques used in answering research questions in the social sciences, management, and public policy. The course emphasizes computation rather than formal derivations. Students will practice using statistical software to conduct data analysis, visualization, and report writing.

FYS-Exploring&Identifying/Acad

This seminar is designed specifically for students entering UMass Amherst in the Interdisciplinary Exploratory Track. The seminar will assist students in making a smooth transition to college, learning about the wide array of majors, minors and certificate programs available, and determining what will be their best path forward. The curriculum covers the process of declaring a major (self-assessment, major and career exploration), as well as time management and essential skills. Students will learn how to navigate UMass requirements, opportunities, and resources.
