Service Industry Operations

The service sector contributes about 70% of the gross domestic product of the US economy. Also, it accounts for about 75% of the US employment. This course in "Service Industry Operations" examines firms in the service sector. The course begins with highlighting the salient aspects of services (specifically, differentiating a service from a product on various dimensions), and then provides an overview of structural, infrastructural, and behavioral aspects of managing service operations.

Emphasis on learning the basic principles, using MS EXCEL, required to organize and manage service and manufacturing organizations. It emphasizes both contemporary dynamics of global economic functioning as well as the historical development of global economic systems as they have unfolded over time. A particular focus of the class is on the institutions that enable and govern economic activity ? meaning institutions of law and property rights, national governmental policies, and the international organizations that govern global economic processes. (Gen. Ed. SB, DG)
