Practicum

Individual field study and practice for a semester or a summer in news organizations, public agencies, or elsewhere. This course number is also used for all internships applied toward credit within the Journalism Department. While these credits will count toward graduation, they do NOT count toward the major -- unless you are in the Sports Journalism Concentration or Public Relations Concentration, both of which require an internship. These credits can only be completed on a Pass/Fail basis.

S-Food Writing

This course approaches food writing from a news reporting perspective. The Pioneer Valley is home to a network of food producers, from farmers and cheese makers to brewers and beekeepers. Students will travel into the field to meet people who make and grow what we eat, conducting interviews and collecting information to synthesize into multimedia stories from publication around themes such as health, history, travel, ecology, animal welfare, social change, nutrition, and home cooking.

Public Relations Ethics

This course is designed to increase student awareness of various ethical situations and responsibilities around the professional practice of public relations. Students will learn how to identify, explore and develop their ability to make responsible strategic communication and business decisions.

PublicRelationsRsrch&Analytics

In this course, students will be introduced to relevant social science research methods and data analytics used by public relations professionals. Students will learn about the importance of research in communication and business situations, as well as how it can be applied to the communication planning, development and evaluation process.
