The Undead Souths

This course will explore themes of the Southern Gothic in works of Cinema and popular Televisual narratives. We will study the development of the lurid motifs of the Gothic that works affiliated with this genre often deploy to invoke a sense of horror and dread, moral corruption, and psychological abjection, all seemingly meant to assimilate the South and its citizens to the category of a degenerate and menacing otherness.

This course focuses on the role that grammar plays in shaping clarity, precision, and effectiveness across a range of academic and professional genres. Through targeted study of key grammatical concepts, students will deepen their understanding of how language choices impact meaning, style, and audience reception. Instruction emphasizes practical application, with assignments that allow students to draft, analyze, and/or revise texts relevant to their own academic and professional disciplines & goals.

Techniq/Academic Presentations

This course is for undergraduate students who learned English as an additional language. Giving effective presentations requires a mastery of a broad range of skills. Students will develop skills as diverse as choosing an appropriate topic, creating effective visuals, and designing a speech opening. The overall goal of this course is to develop an awareness and use of common speech types and organizational strategies and to prepare university-level students to deliver presentations in an academic setting.

America/Academic Readings

In this course, students will explore various key topics in American life through academic readings to hone both their reading comprehension skills and to develop a deeper understanding of culture and context. Using close reading strategies to uncover what stated and implied in texts, students will engage with the current academic conversations being held on the values and norms of American life. Using an intercultural approach, they will be invited to thoughtfully consider their individual reactions to and interactions with such themes, and express these ideas in both discussion and writing.
