This course examines what social media platforms are (and are not) teaching us. Through this course, students will begin to have an understanding of the different types of social media that influence people the most. We will discuss the origins of these platforms and different theorists that have written about them. Some key concepts to be discussed include: gatekeeping, critical thinking, propaganda, click bait, and big data.

In this course, students will identify and explore various academic and professional pathways to pursue their goals in education. The course will introduce various job opportunities in the K-12 schools, higher education settings, community education and more, while making connections to students' own identities as future educators. Students will also learn about the resources available in the College of Education and on-campus to help with their academic, professional and personal aspirations and wellbeings.

The course will introduce us (as a group) to ethnic studies as a framework for, navigating our own socializations, naming pedagogical components in school institutions, and fostering an understanding of restorative practices in learning. These three objectives are necessary for educators-in-training in order to reimagine what it means to be a lifelong learner-teacher and to create future educational spaces that honor and illuminate each others' intersecting social identities.

Join this discussion-based seminar to learn about intercultural education in a local context, with emphasis on identity, embracing differences & communication. Topics will include an overview of culture, communication and interpersonal relationships, nonverbal codes and cultural space. The implications of the 21st century classroom and the UMass community will be examined along with the process for getting to know another culture more intimately. The challenges that are presented in intercultural education will be discussed from the perspective of welcoming and accepting changes

In this course you will learn about potential careers in education and identify academic pathways to pursue your career goals. The course will feature a series of guest speaker talks to introduce you to various jobs in K-12 schools and higher education settings, such as K-12 teaching and staff positions, instructional design jobs, and university student affairs positions.

In this course, you'll begin to reflect on how you hope to see your academic journey develop and grow through your time at UMass. You will participate in meaningful discussion, personal reflection and engaging activities that will lead to a better understanding of yourself, your academic path and professional goals. You'll be introduced to the wide array of careers available to you in the diverse field of Education and how the College of Education can help you achieve those goals.

Chinese Americans make up the largest Asian American community in the US. However, little is taught about their history in higher education. This seminar introduces students to not only the history of Chinese Americans but also the issues and challenges they have been facing since the mid-19th century. Central themes include ethnicity, race, gender, and empire.
