This course explores career development as students start to prepare for life beyond UMass. Topics include career options for journalism majors; resumes, cover letters and networking; job search techniques and preparation. This course provides a structure and supportive environment for helping students define and pursue their career goals.

This graduate seminar examines key historical events, issues, and people in the nineteenth-century United States. Readings will cover a wide range of topics, including presidential politics and the two-party system; slavery and abolition; citizenship and suffrage; the Second Great Awakening and social reform movements; Indian Removal; westward expansion and the U.S.-Mexico War; the Civil War and Reconstruction; and immigration, industrialization, and labor.

This seminar is an introduction to programming and theorem-proving with dependent types. We will use Idris, which is a dependently-typed language that is similar to languages such as Coq and Agda. In the first part of the course, we will individually work through the book Type-Driven Development with Idris. In the latter part, we will undertake a larger project as a group.

This course provides an overview of statistical methods, their conceptual underpinnings, and their use in various settings taken from current news, as well as from the physical, biological, and social sciences. Topics will include exploring distributions and relationships, planning for data production, sampling distributions, basic ideas of inference (confidence intervals and hypothesis tests), inference for distributions, and inference for relationships, including chi-square methods for two-way tables and regression.
