CHEMISTRY III: ORGANIC LAB

Material builds on introductory organic chemistry topics covered in CHM 222 and focuses more heavily on retrosynthetic analysis and multistep synthetic planning. Specific topics include reactions of alkyl halides, alcohols and ethers; aromaticity and reactions of benzene; and cycloaddition reactions including the Diels-Alder reaction. Prerequisite: CHM 222 and successful completion of the CHM 222 lab. Enrollment limited to 16 per lab section.

Intro to Analysis

Completeness of the real numbers; topology of n-space including the Bolzano-Weierstrass and Heine-Borel theorems; sequences, properties of functions continuous on sets; infinite series, uniform convergence. The course may also study the Gamma function, Stirling’s formula, or Fourier series. Four class hours per week.

Advanced Drawing

Studio. For intermediate and advanced students interested in making a transition from known and seen objects and figures toward a freer and more imaginative concept and statement. The use of drawing media such as ink, crayon, collage, watercolor. Figure drawing, still life, landscape, and interior problems. Materials list given in class.

Ord Dif Eq/Sci Eng

Introduction to ordinary differential equations. First and second order linear differential equations, systems of linear differential equations, Laplace transform, numerical methods, applications. Prerequisite: MATH 132, or 136; corequisite: MATH 233.

[Note: Because this course presupposes knowledge of basic math skills, it will satisfy the R1 requirement upon successful completion.]
