The conditions that we find ourselves in - extreme social inequalities, dislocations, and violence as part of increasingly unstable ecologies - implore us to rethink the very nature of our economies and ourselves. Yet, even as our economic activity pushes towards runaway climate change, there is a cynical sense of inevitability; the very foundations of our dominant economy are largely taken for granted and often explained away as the result of human nature.

Drugs & Behavior

Principles of pharmacology, behavioral testing, brain structure and neuron morphology, neurochemistry, mode and site of action of antianxiety and antipsychotic drugs, analgesics, hypnotics, sedatives, and anesthetics. Recreational drugs such as tobacco, alcohol, cocaine, amphetamines, discussed. Prerequisite: introductory psychology. Some chemistry recommended.

Phonetic Processing

The sound system of English and, to a lesser extent, those of other languages. Phonemes, allophones, phonological rules, and historical changes in the English language. Phonetic universals in comparison to English phonetics. Reading and writing English words and sentences using the International Phonetic Alphabet, including special symbols used for coarticulation, dialects, disorders, and infant vocalizations.

The emergence of speech and language milestones in English-speaking children with emphasis on the development of phonology, semantics, syntax, and pragmatics, and how these aspects of language may be influenced by cognitive development. Satisfies the Integrative Experience requirement for BS-ComDis majors. Prerequisite: LINGUIST 201 or equivalent.
