S-Current Issues/Public Health

Through class discussion as well as readings and presentations, participants will explore current health issues within the US and globally. We will begin with an introduction to the language of public health: the burden of disease, determinants of health, how health status is measured and health systems. We will explore the following questions: How does this approach differ from the medical approach? How does public health offer strategic responses to pressing social, political and health issues? What is the government's responsibility for public health?

The line between truth and fiction is often blurred in the world of health advocacy. With advancing knowledge and an increasingly complex social and political landscape, it is vital that public health professionals can not only effectively communicate their viewpoint, but also to recognize truth and misinformation. This seminar will use a series of structured, student-led debates about current controversial topics in public health to learn commonly used tactics in media and health communication.

Have you prepared your zombie apocalypse plan? How well would your community fair? Did you know that the CDC recently used this unlikely emergency scenario to demonstrate key concepts in emergency preparedness? Throughout history, epidemics and disasters have influenced the course of public health and emergency management practice. This class will look at famous historical epidemics and disasters and compare them to current public health events.

Many of us want to work in a job where we feel like we are making a difference. Non-profits in the United States and worldwide, are dedicated to well-known causes, such as the American Heart Association, or gain popular attention through viral cause-marketing such as the ice bucket challenge for ALS. Non-profits can range from small volunteer run efforts with a very narrow focus, to international networks that wield immense power to enact change. Either way, they must follow best practices to maintain their status and effectiveness.

Are you asking, "What should I do after graduation?" This course will provide an overview of the options available to public health graduates through the personal accounts of working public health professionals. The seminar will be an opportunity to familiarize yourself with career or graduate options, while equipping you with the job seeking skills to help you land your first post-college position. The course will also focus on job skills to ensure your success.

If you turn on the TV, flip open a magazine or log on to the Internet, chances are you?ll see a headline about how to quickly drop unwanted weight using the latest exercise fad or diet craze. The truth is, nothing is going to make you fitter or less fat besides breaking bad eating habits and taking up exercise that suits you and not because it is a celebrity favorite. This seminar will focus on current global trends on nutrition and health with particular interest in common misconceptions around food and exercise.
