Developing countries face a significant challenge in the realm of public health, and due to the twin effects of poor quality of the environment and lack of access to affordable healthcare, mortality rates associated with environment-induced health effects are very high. Lower literacy levels, poverty, and other socio-political factors can further compound the problem. The objective of the course is to provide an overview of different environmental issues in developing countries, and the associated health effects.

S-Current Issues/EnvHealth

Students, faculty, and guest speakers present on current and emerging topics on environmental health research and issues with an interdisciplinary focus. Students will become aware of the recent development and discoveries, global environmental health problems, and career options in public health. Students will review scientific literature, engage in group discussions, and interactions with the speakers.

S- Role of Religion/Pubhlth

Religion is an important aspect of Public Health that is often overlooked. Communicating and working with religious communities is essential in many Public Health interventions. This course will explore what it means to be a public-health professional who has to deal with many different groups of people and communities, none more numerous than religious organization.

S-Antioxidant&Oxidative Stress

Considering a clinical or research career? Want to learn more about antioxidant therapeutics and how to recognize a hoax? This seminar will investigate the common disease "mechanism" of oxidative stress and how it contributes to a myriad of diseases. We will look at antioxidants in consumer products, and evaluate how effective specific antioxidants are in preventing stress and disease. It is recommended, but not required, that students have a basic foundation of chemistry.

ST- Medieval & Renaissance Lit

This course, open to both advanced undergraduate and to graduate students, surveys Medieval cantigas and historiagrafia; works by playwright Gil Vicente; literary representations of the story of Ines de Castro; the epic and lyric poetry of Camres; and the travel literature inspired by the Portuguese Expansion starting in 1415 and culminating in the loss of Portuguese Independence to Spain in 1580, the year of Camres' death.

S- Science Journalism

Many of the most fascinating, beautiful, and enduring mysteries confronted by humanity are of a scientific nature. And some of the most important political debates of the day hinge on a complex mingling of hard evidence and lingering uncertainty. This course will lay out an array of essential conceptual skills for reporting, writing, and analyzing news about science and technology.
